LESSON 6 OF 8 · MEASUREMENT

Third-party measurement for CTV: partners, MMM and verification

QUICK ANSWER

Third-party measurement lets you read CTV results with a method you control and compare TV with other channels. Ask which partners a platform works with before you buy.

Why not rely on the platform's own report?

A platform that sells you impressions and measures their effect has an interest in the result. Its methods may be sound, but you cannot easily compare them with other channels or other platforms. Third-party measurement firms apply one method across your media, so finance and leadership can compare TV with search, social and retail media on the same basis.

What kinds of partners are there?

  • Attribution and analytics partners that receive exposure data and match it to your conversions.
  • Incrementality partners that design and read holdout or geo tests.
  • Marketing mix modelling (MMM) providers that estimate each channel's contribution over months from spend and sales history.
  • Mobile measurement partners for app installs and in-app events.
  • Verification and brand-safety firms that check where and how ads ran.

Third-party measurement does not replace the platform's own reporting. You still need the platform's delivery and attribution data to steer the campaign day to day. The partner's role is to give an outside read on the questions that decide budgets: did the channel cause results, and how does it compare with the others. Plan both from the start, and make sure the two use the same definitions of a conversion and the same dates, so differences between them can be explained rather than argued about.

How do partners connect to a CTV platform?

Usually through an integration: the platform passes exposure logs or event data to the partner, or the partner's tag or pixel is added to campaigns. Ask whether the integration is already built, whether log-level data is available, and whether there is a cost for the study.

What about verification and brand safety?

Verification firms check that ads were delivered as bought: to real viewers, on the right apps, and next to suitable content. In CTV, where ads are served inside apps on a TV, verification depends on the platform and publishers supporting the partner's measurement. If your brand has verification rules, check which partners each platform names before you shortlist it.

How do you choose a measurement partner for CTV?

Start with the question you need answered. If finance wants to know what each channel contributes over a year, an MMM provider fits. If you need to know whether this quarter's CTV campaign caused new customers, an incrementality partner that can run holdout or geo tests fits better. If you sell mostly in apps, your mobile measurement partner may already receive CTV exposure data. Then check three practical points: whether the partner already integrates with the platforms on your shortlist, whether it can receive log-level or household-level exposure data, and who pays for the study. A partner that cannot read a platform's data cannot help you judge that platform.

Which platforms name partners on their pages?

A platform that does not name a partner on its pages may still support one; ask for the list in writing.
